  11. ABOUT MODERN PASSENGER FONT:  
  12.         This font is a virtual railroad for your printer.  YOU WILL NEED A  
  13. HIGH RESOLUTION PRINTER TO TRULY APPRECIATE THIS FONT.  The screen bit map  
  14. isn't the best , but load up the PostScript and PRINT OUT A COPY OF  
  15. "MP_MAP.WRI" to see all the living detail in full heart stopping color (well, 
  16.  
  17. I get carried away, but you get the idea).  Now you can add the finest  
  18. passenger trains to your documents.  
  19.   
  20.         There were a few holes in the passenger train font.  I liked the  
  21. font, but I felt that there was something lacking the day that I released it. 
  22.  
  23.  I wanted to include modern passenger train equipment.  Since most of the  
  24. trains I see are in the west, when I think of Amtrak, I think of Superliner  
  25. cars.  Thus, most of this font is devoted to Superliner cars.  I also tossed  
  26. in a couple of odds and ends that didn't make it into the passenger font and  
  27. aren't really modern passenger equipment, but....  Maybe you won't notice the 
  28.  
  29. fact that the RDC's and the commuter cars have been around for over thirty  
  30. years and are not too modern.  I was tossing around the idea of including the 
  31.  
  32. X-2000 and the ICE, but those trains just seemed so dated.  I might do a high 
  33.  
  34. speed rail font if I am not sick to death of trains after I do all of the  
  35. other fonts I am talking about, we will have to wait and see.  
  36.         There are four different locomotives, two commuter cars, three RDC's  
  37. and eight passenger cars.  Each locomotive and car is assigned to a different 
  38.  
  39. key.  For each locomotive, lower case corresponds to facing leftward and  
  40. upper case corresponds to facing rightward.  For the rest of the cars, lower  
  41. and upper case characters will be opposite sides of the same car, but there  
  42. is no real distinction between forward and backward.  In some cases, it is a  
  43. small distinction between left and right, but, it is included for  
  44. completeness.  After loading the font, you should print out a copy of  
  45. "MP_MAP.WRI" for a sample of the font and to see which characters map to  
  46. which keys.  
  47.         My logic for assigning the characters was to put the locomotives in  
  48. the upper left corner of the keyboard.  I put the Superliner cars and other  
  49. equipment that you would find in a typical Amtrak train along the middle row, 
  50.  
  51. a-k.  In the lower left, I put the RDC's.  The commuter cars are in the upper 
  52.  
  53. right.

  56. IN THE EVENT YOU ARE UNABLE TO OPEN THE MAP FILE, THIS FONT USES THE  
  57. FOLLOWING KEYS FOR VARIOUS LOCOMOTIVES AND CARS:  
  58. q, Q, w, W, e, E, r, R, a, A, s, S, d, D, f, F, g, G, h, H, j, J, k, K, o, O,

  63. GENERIC README (Similar in all of my fonts):

  65. IMPORTANT STUFF:  
  66.   
  67. SOME CHARACTERS MAY BE TOO DETAILED TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN and will appear as  
  68. empty boxes.  They should print okay though.  
  69.   
  70. DO NOT INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT and TRUE TYPE VERSIONS AT THE SAME TIME  
  71.   
  72. THE TRUE TYPE FONT MAY NOT WORK ON ALL SYSTEMS, THE POST SCRIPT FONT IS  
  73. PREFERED.

  76. ABOUT THE IBM VERSIONS:  
  77.         Yeah, I am a Mac head.  I am slowly learning all I can about the IBM  
  78. systems.  I am also enlisting the help of my IBM friends as "consultants".   
  79. This might be a bumpy road at first, but these fonts are pretty neat and they 
  80.  
  81. are worth the trek.  From my end, I am more than willing to work with you to  
  82. get the fonts to work on your machine.  On your end, I ask for patience if  
  83. they don't work on the first try.  Please let me know ASAP if you are having  
  84. any problems.  I am willing to do minor changes or generate bit map files for 
  85.  
  86. DOS users as much as my time will permit.  Let me know what you want or need  
  87. and we'll work something out.

  89. TRUE TYPE VS. POST SCRIPT:  
  90.         On some machines, not all characters of the True Type font will be  
  91. visible.  Please don't lose heart, they are there and should print okay, it  
  92. is just the fact that there are so many points in the character that windows  
  93. decided you don't really need to see it.  I will try to fix this in later  
  94. versions.  If the True Type font gives you problems, try the Post Script  
  95. version, it seems to be a little more stable.  Note that the contents of both 
  96.  
  97. fonts are the same.

  100. HOW TO INSTALL THE POST SCRIPT TRAIN FONT ONTO YOUR SYSTEM:  
  101.         You will need WINDOWS 3.0 or later and the ADOBE TYPE MANAGER (ATM)  
  102. version 2.0 or later.  
  103. 1) Start the ATM control panel by double clicking on it.  
  104. 2) Click the Add button  
  105. 3) Locate the drive/directory containing your fonts using the scroll bars  
  106. 4) Double click on the drive/directory to show the names of the fonts on the  
  107. disk  
  108. 5) Select the fonts to install  
  109. 6) Click the Add button  
  110. 7) Exit ATM (you may have to restart windows to use the fonts, depending on  
  111. the version of ATM you have)

  114.         IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES installing this font or it doesn't seem to print 
  115.  
  116. out correctly, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as soon as possible.  I can either give you 
  117.  
  118. more specific instillation information or go and fix the bug.  (e-mail is  
  119. great for this, but snail mail works fine too)

  122. NOW FOR THE "ASKING FOR MONEY" BIT, AKA, THIS IS SHAREWARE:  
  123.         You are free to use (play with, throw at the cat, etc.) this font for 
  124.  
  125. one week after receiving it.  If you like it and decide to keep it, you  
  126. should send a US $10 "shareware" fee to myself. (see accompanying "the  
  127. ModPassenger story" for why) at the address below.  Please include a brief  
  128. note describing where you got this font, what you like about it, and what you 
  129.  
  130. would like to see added to it.  
  131.         If you just have to have the full collection of my train fonts (see  
  132. "the whole story"), send a FORMATTED 3.5" HD disk (I don't know if they will  
  133. fit on an 800k disk any more) and a SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE to the  
  134. address below. (I hate to format disks and you will be sure to get the right  
  135. machine, Mac or IBM, this way)  
  136.         I do not want to send any of my customers into bankruptcy, if you are

  138. honestly poor, (i.e., you ain't gonna support the American way and my  
  139. education) please send a post card (the weirder the better) describing where  
  140. you got this font, what you like about it and what you would like to see

  144. THE FINE PRINT:  
  145. -Each font or icon package is an individual product.  Thus, if you keep  
  146. Passenger Font and Freight Font, you should pay $20, not $10.

  148. -You may NOT use this font, ModPassenger Font, in any publication or any  
  149. product unless you register your copy of ModPassenger Font by sending $10 FOR 
  150.  
  151. EACH FONT YOU USE.  Be sure to specify which fonts you are registering for.   
  152. It is not fair for you to make money off of my hard work without paying the  
  153. Shareware fees.

  169. WHY SHOULD YOU SEND IN THE SHAREWARE FEE?  
  170.         Well, I am releasing this font in it's entirety.  I put a lot of hard 
  171.  
  172. work into this font.  I have also gotten a lot of pleasure from it.  Ignoring

  174. all of the capitalistic angles, your shareware dollar will speed up the  
  175. development of new train fonts and help me afford new font tools.  My goal is 
  176.  
  177. to at least break even.  
  178.         Only 17 people have registered my shareware products since I first  
  179. released them six months ago.  There are a lot of expenses that go into these 
  180.  
  181. fonts.  My font editor cost almost $300.  Then there are the little expenses  
  182. like ink cartridges (you wouldn't believe how many ink cartridges I go  
  183. through) and paying for a mail box.  Oy!  And you want to talk about  
  184. memory... 30 Meg of hard disk devoted to fonts and icon development.
